Exhibiting in the grounds of a National Trust treasure like Petworth House is always a privilege, and this year’s curation centered on the dialogue between the structured landscape and the vibrant life within it.

. Born in Czechoslovakia and trained in the rigorous Central European traditions of Prague, Milan brings a sophisticated, structured approach to the sprawling beauty of the British landscape.

. Whether capturing the tidal shifts of a salt marsh or the historic silhouette of Cartmel Priory, Milan uses color and composition to evoke a sense of permanence and peace. Visitors were particularly drawn to his ability to find the "new" in familiar vistas, proving that a great landscape is a conversation that never truly ends.

           Anna Pugh

, an artist who truly needs no introduction to the British art world. As one of the UK’s most cherished and established colorists, Anna’s presence on our stand was a significant draw for seasoned collectors and admirers alike.

Her paintings are the very definition of our "art that makes you feel good" philosophy. Characterized by their "fresh and irreverent" vitality, Anna’s narratives—where the flora and fauna of the countryside are rendered with both meticulous detail and a touch of the surreal—brought a sense of joy and wonder to the Petworth marquee. Seeing her work in the historic, storied setting of the park felt particularly fitting; her unique ability to capture the secret, bustling life of the natural world mirrored the timeless beauty of the landscape just outside our doors.

A "Stable" Connection in West Sussex

While the Petworth fair is steeped in antiques and history, bringing our contemporary collection to this audience felt incredibly natural. Many visitors were fascinated by our gallery’s own story—based in converted stables at Saint Wendred’s Racing Yard in Newmarket.

The connection between the heritage of Petworth Park and our own racing heritage created a wonderful dialogue. Whether we were discussing the technical mastery of a Milan Ivanič acrylic or the whimsical narratives of an Anna Pugh original, the theme remained consistent: a celebration of beauty, craftsmanship, and the British countryside.

Positioned within the vibrant atmosphere of the Centaur building, the Art & Horse Racing stand served as a sophisticated retreat. While the fair was bustling with energy, our curation focused on "art that makes you feel good," creating a space where the raw power of the equine world met the serene beauty of the natural landscape.

If there was one artist who stopped visitors in their tracks this weekend, it was

           Benedicte Gele

. The French artist’s work is a masterclass in "less is more." Using a powerful combination of charcoal, chalk, and acrylic, Gele doesn't just paint a horse; she captures its internal dialogue.

Collectors were drawn to the raw, expressive nature of her "Horse Soul" series. In the high-energy environment of a racecourse fair, Gele’s minimalist approach—focusing on the tension of a neck or the curve of a flank—provided a visceral emotional connection. Her work reminded us all that the beauty of the horse lies not just in its speed, but in its profound sensitivity.

Ramasso’s ability to place the horse within a dreamlike, almost cinematic landscape resonated deeply with the Cheltenham audience. His work carries an "old-world" Italian flair but feels entirely modern, making it a favorite for those looking to add a statement piece that balances power with mystery.

One of the most praised aspects of our stand was the dialogue between the different mediums on display:

glass sculptures provided a masterclass in elegance. In an environment defined by speed and strength, Vardar’s soft, lyrical curves and "hidden goddesses" offered a moment of quiet introspection. Her work reminded visitors that beauty, much like a perfect race, requires a balance of strength and grace.

landscapes brought the "big skies" of Suffolk to the rolling hills of Gloucestershire. Fresh from her "Suffolk Skies" solo show, Dawn’s mastery of light and atmosphere resonated with those looking for a window into the tranquil English countryside.

Dawn Reader has a rare gift: the ability to paint the invisible. Her work does not merely depict clouds or sunsets; it captures the weight of the air, the humidity of a brewing storm, and the fleeting, golden transparency of the "golden hour."

           "Suffolk Skies,"

Dawn explored the vastness of the county she calls home. Suffolk is famous for its "big skies," a byproduct of its flat, rolling terrain. For a landscape artist, this is both a gift and a challenge. Without the verticality of a mountain range to anchor the composition, the artist must rely entirely on the nuance of color and the movement of the brush to create depth. Dawn’s mastery of atmospheric perspective was on full display, leading the viewer’s eye across miles of marshland and heath, ultimately resting on a horizon line that felt infinite.

Art in the Heart of the Yard

The setting of this solo show added a layer of authenticity that is unique to our gallery. Based in three converted stables in the heart of Newmarket, Art & Horse Racing exists where the world of elite sport meets fine art.

Throughout the exhibition, the experience of viewing Dawn’s work was underscored by the rhythmic sounds of the racing yard—the distant clatter of hooves on the gallops and the quiet activity of the stables. This juxtaposition felt particularly poignant for "Suffolk Skies." The very skies Dawn paints are the ones that our thoroughbreds train under every morning at dawn. Seeing her luminous oils hung against the rustic, historic walls of the stables reminded us that nature and the horse are inextricably linked.

           A Journey of "Feel-Good" Art

Our gallery mission has always been to curate "art that makes you feel good," and Dawn Reader’s collection embodied this philosophy perfectly. Her paintings evoke a sense of quietude and introspection. In a world that feels increasingly fast-paced, her work invites the viewer to slow down and breathe.

Visitors to the show often spoke of a sense of "recognition"—not just of the specific Suffolk locations, but of the feeling of a specific day. Whether it was the cool, silver-grey light of a winter morning or the bruised, purple clouds of a summer afternoon, Dawn’s work triggered a visceral, emotional response. It is art that provides a window out of the room and into the wild, open beauty of the English countryside.

While the physical "Suffolk Skies" exhibition has drawn to a close, the impact of Dawn Reader’s work remains. We are proud to continue representing Dawn as part of our international roster of artists. Her exploration of light and land continues to be a cornerstone of our collection.

This special showcase, presented in conjunction with the Lucy B Campbell Gallery, offers a rare opportunity to trace the "arc of a career" that spans over thirty years of storytelling, vibrant color, and gentle surrealism.

A Master of Narrative and Nature

Anna Pugh is often described as a "storyteller" as much as a painter. Born in 1938, her work is deeply rooted in the English countryside. Growing up as the daughter of a vet and a gardener, her affinity for flora and fauna was hard-coded from the start.

Her style is instantly recognizable—a playful blend of graphic precision (a nod to her early training in graphic design) and the dreamlike perspectives of Persian and Mogul art. In a Pugh painting, the natural world is enlivened by touches of the surreal: oversized blossoms, capering insects, and animals that seem to possess a quiet, knowing wisdom. Much like the works of Rousseau or Chagall, her pieces offer a glimpse into a world that feels more vibrant and intentional than our own.

Highlighting the Exhibition: From 1991 to Today

What makes this specific exhibition at the Art & Horse Racing Gallery so compelling is its breadth. It allows viewers to see how Pugh’s vision has evolved while remaining steadfastly devoted to the beauty of the natural world.

            "Home Coming" (1991):

An early career highlight featuring two riders on red horses set against a lush, multi-colored forest. It perfectly captures the movement and narrative mystery she is known for.

            "Truffle Hunting Contest" (2001):

A whimsical, large-scale piece where people and a pig navigate a landscape of fiery red trees—a testament to her ability to infuse a scene with humor and vitality.

            "Long Grass" (2022):

One of her more recent works, this painting features four quails alert in a meadow. It showcases a refined mastery of detail and a sense of "persuasive illusion" that brings the viewer right down into the grass with the birds.

           Why Newmarket?

The Art & Horse Racing Gallery is an experience in itself. Located in converted stables at a working racing yard, it bridges the gap between the elite world of equine athletes and the contemplative beauty of fine art. Founders Ilka and her team have created a "destination gallery" where the grit of the yard meets the grace of the canvas.

The gallery’s ethos of "art that makes you feel good" aligns perfectly with Pugh’s whimsical landscapes. Her work reflects the same dedication and natural strength found in the racehorses that surround the gallery walls.

Whether you are a long-time collector or a newcomer to the "charmed world" of Anna Pugh, this exhibition is a must-see. Her paintings are famously hard to come by—rarely returning to circulation once they enter private collections—making this retrospective a vital moment for art lovers.

exhibition, is up, paired with the Art & Horse Racing Gallery. This gallery in a unique setting carrying works of renowned local, national and international artists. The emphasis here has always been the horse, and the gallery’s main mission is to offer clients both ‘The Beauty of Nature’ and ‘Art that makes You Feel Good’.

The centerpiece of the Race Horse in Art exhibition is a 1960’s Raoul Millais painting of exceptional sprinter The Bug, who, in 1946, won the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot, The July Cup at Newmarket, and The Nunthorpe at York. The same year he also won the Diadem Stakes at Ascot which takes place in October.

This exceptional piece has been held by the Spence family since the 60's. Artworks of this caliber very rarely come up for sale and it is an opportunity to acquire an investment piece as well as a painting of profound historical meaning.

No better place to exhibit “The Bug” than in Newmarket during the July Festival!
